Wild Blooms Of The Season

Kans grass/Saccharum spontaneum, locally known as Kohua

The Kans grass is blooming. The good thing about seeing these blooms is that we’ll get a respite from the summer heat because soon enough, the weather gods will be kinder. It’s a sign that we look forward to every year….

A lesser known cousin also blooms at this time of the year.:)

These wild flowers are seen all along the edge of roads now. The blooms look like (I’ve been comparing Google images) the Urn fruit beautyberry/Callicarpa macrophylla.

I found this tiny skipper on a daisy-like flower. Comparing images from my book of Common Indian Wild Flowers by Isaac Kehimkar, it looks like Coat Buttons/Tridax procumbens.Flowers are said to be attractive to butterflies and bees.

Kans grass is locally known here as talahib. my grandmother used to say that babies start to have coughs and colds when talahib blooms because the pollen causes allergies; asthmatics also have frequent attacks.
i also have a photo of the wild flower in the last photo.:p

  4. I love grasses and these are beautiful. Mine too was moving toward fall and too signaling an end to the hot weather…Michelle

Lovely grasses. We used to make plaits from the tridax flowers, as children. I hardly see them anywhere now. The purple wild flower is beautiful.
