Watery Wednesday/Water Hen

Welcome to Watery Wednesday! Not much water in these photos but the birds make these puddles a joy to see…!

The white-breasted water hen/Amauromis phoenicurus is now as common as the sparrows and the mynah. Shy and ever so furtive in its movements, it lives in the marshy areas in our neighbourhood. Earlier we could hear them, rather than actually see them. But now that more houses have come up leaving them little space, they have started venturing into our yards, foraging in our gardens…But they still nest in those small marshy patches that’ll surely vanish in the future. But till then the sight of these beautiful birds will always be welcome!

    Kanak,
These kind of birds are a joy to watch them sort their way about in the marsh. Thanks for sharing this one I’d never even heard of before.

This bird is charming, and your photos, too, with faint ripples in the first and reflections in two of them. Many wild creatures have lost their habitat because of human activities. In my area, bulbuls and Japanese white-eye are welcome but crows are bit of nuisance, they rip off garbage and litter the street. Have a nice week!

  5. She has yellow legs and a white mask and bib, how pretty. Yet looks nothing like the hens we have, which are female chickens.

Great pictures of a beautiful bird. What a pity that so many habitats are getting destroyed!

You have more water than I do. I have linked up to the same meme today via my 2 other blogs; Pet Creek and Tropical Nature Photos. And I’ve linked up to Nature Rambles via Onenezz.

The bird has long ‘toes’ hehe… I wonder if it will fly high…

It is a lovely bird Kanak and very much like our Coot which of course is in the same Rail family. The big yellow feet always make me laugh 🙂
